A Few of my Favorite Things…July

2 08 2010

1. I have been a follower of So You Think You Can Dance, since Season 2 so naturally this season I was excited for it to show up again and have not been disappointed.  Both nights are set on our DVR so we cruise through an episode in no time flat and often times have disagreed with the feedback given from the judges, especially this season.  But trust me when I say, if you are not a follower, maybe it is time you become one.  It’s on Wednesday and Thrusday nights on Fox.

2. Every time I see this ad on TV, I automatically think of camping as a kid on our family vacations.  My parents had one of those Super 8 video cameras and looking back at the footage is just like watching this.  I remember using the stove to make eggs in the morning and goofing around with my older brothers.  To watch the commercial, click the link below the picture.

Just seeing it made me excited to go camping with our friends this month, and if you recall I was sick the weekend before so I got to see this commercial many, many times.  We had such a great time making s’mores around the campfire, cooking “campfire omelets”,  and who doesn’t love sleeping in a tent (notice our is a Coleman)?

3. Kit Kat candy bars.  YUM!  I have been asked over and over what I have been craving, and I have a pretty simple answer, SWEETS!  Basically, I have always loved sweet treats but I have been wanting to eat them non-stop since becoming pregnant.  So, I have been freezing them and it is such a great way to beat the heat now that we have been enjoying the sunshine.

4. The Melting Pot has long been one of my favorite restaurants.  There is just something about the ambiance, drinking wine and having a great meal, often times with friends.  John and I hadn’t been out on a date in quite a while, so when I got a tip that our local Melting Pot was having an anniversary event, I made reservations.  Even without the wine it was a great night and we dipped our way to contentment!  Gotta love when someone else makes and cleans up a fondue night!!

5. I have saved my best for last: Shopping for a little girl!!  I started to plan “Ziggie’s” nursery this month, as well as, bought a few onesies our little girl that I just couldn’t do without.  I knew that little girl things were fun to look at, but there is just something about that soft pink and if it has a ruffle on her bottom, I find it impossible to resist!!  I have been eyeing this little number from Target for a couple weeks now 😉  So Cute!!!

This month I have much to be excited about.  Here is a look at just a few of the things that made me happy!

  1. I get a ton of subscriptions each month and immediately look through the design related ones (basically the day they arrive) but the other ones get put in a pile to thumb through while I am bored.  I am rarely bored so usually that pile is pretty high.  In the recent weeks I have been taking some of that pile to the beach with me.  Now I have a couple new surprising “favorites” from that pile, which is weird because they are subscriptions I took on myself!  I am loving Cooking Light (anyone that knows me know that I can’t cook well and the majority of the things I do choose to cook wouldn’t be considered by most to be “light”) and Sunset, which has the tagline-Living in the West (so doesn’t really attract those of you not living in the west-sorry.)  Cooking Light has some of the best recipes that I have tasted in quite some time and they are surprisingly easy to make.  Who knows, if I had known how simple cooking healthy could be maybe I would have started a long time ago!  And Sunset features places I want to go and see along the western states, along with some fun local kind of stuff to experience.
  2. Pandora Radio is getting a ton of play time on my computer these days.  A few of my favorite stations are Taylor Swift Radio, Dar Williams Radio, Islands in the Stream (of the likes of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton), and Girls Just Want to Have Fun Radio.  I must say that I can’t help but bop to the ’80s tunes as they pour out of the speakers and scream sing along with the Pointer Sisters and The Bangles.  My favorite feature is that you don’t necessarily get the song you put in as the station and they mix the content up so you get to know new artists that are just up and coming as well as the tried and true old favorites.  Plus it is free (up to 40 hours per month) and virtually commercial free, so click here to sign up from your own account.
  3. I forgot how much I love Twizzlers since my friend Sarah moved a couple hours away.  This was a treat that she always kept in her house since it was “low fat”.  I saw them in the store about a month ago and thought they sounded tasty so bought a package.  They disappeared in a heartbeat so back to the store several more times to stock up.  Talk about good and if you have never tried it, dip them in peanut butter.  SO GOOD!
  4. Lastly, I am loving the return of spring!!  Everything about it.  From the dewy paw prints that Gracie makes during our morning walks while the birds chirp and the trees start to bloom to sitting in the sun on the lawn.  This shot was taken while we (Gracie and I) sat at the park working last Tuesday while the power at our house was scheduled to be down.  It was the perfect day for me to sit with my laptop and magazines and for Gracie to roll around in grass and play with the kids at the nearby playground.  It just makes me SO EXCITED for early summer!

This month has blown by (no pun intended to those poor mid-westerners and easterners who have had blowing snow everyday this month).  I can’t believe the month I consider “spring to start” is right around the corner.  I just had a few things for the list this month, but wanted to share my findings with you.  So check them out!

1. For starters, who didn’t see Pink at the Grammy’s.  I have been a huge fan for a long time and I think I listened to the Funhouse CD on auto-replay for the whole first month that I owned it, but her performance just solidified what a HUGE rock star she is.  Flying through the air, hanging on silks, while singing your heart out (no lipsyncing for her) is just so amazing!!  She looked sophisticated and elegant down to her high heels.  Way to go Pink.  If you missed it, click here to see the video.

2. This is a new shop on the internet, Succenlent Love Designs, that sells gorgeous succulents.  The beauty is in the way they pot them, the plants they choose and the way they display them make these a great asset for your home.  Since we all know I have brown thumbs these are perfect as they don’t require too much attention or watering.  This bubble is customizable and I absolutely am thinking I need a few for my dining room.

3. I was in search for a couple little inexpensive pillows for my guest room sofa and ran across Hettle’s brilliant designs. These pillows are so cute, modern and FUN.  Usually a ruffle is too girly to get me interested, but she creates them in such a way that they are structured and beautiful.  Check out her online store to see all of them, but here is just a little sneak peek of what you will see.  LOVE them!!

4. Don’t try to rush out to your nearest magazine stand and try to pick this guy up because he won’t be there waiting for you.  Instead, this is an online magazine from the site Issuu.  Part of me LOVES it (the cheap part since it is a free subscription) and part of me hates that I can’t bring it to the dog park with me like all my other glossy friends.  (But don’t worry those of you who have iphones as they are working on an app to take it on the go.)  Anyways, the contents more than make up for the “online only” part.  Similar to Domino (which folded in April 2009) it takes a look at DIY projects, trends and fantastic interiors.  Stop in and take a look, you won’t be disappointed-however you might just be a little jealous that you won’t have enough money or space to recreate everything you see.  http://www.lonnymag.com/: first issue, second issue, current issue.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

A few of my favorite things…in January

29 01 2010

So I have been reading some general blogs for a while now and have found a few that I really enjoy reading.  Dusty at All Things G&D has a regular post at the end of each month where she recounts all the things she has found/enjoyed/experienced in the past month.  I thought I would try my hand at a similar post so…here it goes.

1. I had been mourning the collapse of such great publications for a while now. Great magazines that had been around for a long time were screeching to a halt such as House & Garden, Domino (not such a long production run but EVERYONE loved it), and most recently Metropolitan Home.  Then, out of nowhere, I found a new magazine this month, Fresh Home Magazine.  It is still pretty new to the newsstands and I found my copy at a local Home Depot, but I have to say I think we are going to have a great relationship.  They cover topics for the DIY’er about decorating, furniture building, the outdoors as well as what is new to design.  Pick up a copy, I think you will really enjoy the read.

2. Surfing Etsy the other day, I came across a simple necklace called, Two Names-One Love.  Now, I love the simplicity of the necklace with the little gem.  Beautiful.  The jeweler is named Simag and she specializes in personalized jewelry written in either Hebrew or English.  I have already printed a picture, hung it on the fridge and hinted at John that I would love this for Valentine’s Day.  We’ll see what he thinks and I will stand by with my fingers crossed!

3. This is quite a personal thing but I tried pad thai for the first time in January and am crazy about it.  Poor John has had to eat it several times this month already and I don’t see that stopping for a while.  I have always been a rice kinda gal and generally think long noodles can be a pain in the butt to eat.  However, I didn’t totally understand the power of the sauce.  YUM!

4.  Project Runway is back in all its glory-in New York!  I think they had an off season last fall and I got tired of watching, but when I heard they were moving production back to New York I was excited for the return.  The new pad they live in is spectacular (what cool walls they have), the cast seems to be fresh, and the fashions are going the distance.  Plus, what lady out there doesn’t love sitting on your sofa, glass of wine in hand, screaming at the television ripping on the designer’s right along with Tim and Heidi?!  I still can’t believe the dress above started out as a burlap sack!  I think this is going to be a great season and just a little guilty pleasure of mine.

5. Last but not least, speaking of guilty pleasures, the Winter X games are back (this weekend on ESPN).  As you know from Monday’s post, I am an absolute extreme sports junkie.  So you can only imagine what my weekend will be like watching snowmobiles doing back flips, Shaun White working the snowboard superpipe and tons of skiers doing some wicked tricks.  I can’t wait!
